Hemodialysis Nutrition
With hemodialysis, the diet is affected by kidney function, dialysate components, duration of dialysis, and rate of blood flow through an artificial kidney. The goal with hemodialysis nutrition therapy is to maintain nutritional status, prevent excessive accumulation of fluids and waste products, and minimize the metabolic effects of ESRD. The total amount of energy/calories that is adequate to follow during hemodialysis is about 35kcal/kg for adults under 60 and a normal weight. For obese adults and adults over 60 about 30kcal/kg should be consumed. Kcals refer to the number of calories. The protein amount consumed should increase because proteins that are lost during dialysis need to be replaced. It is recommended that 1.2g/kg should be consumed.
